In M3 it is revealed that he put all his efforts into studying magic instead of sowrdsmanship - so much that he didn't need a sword, as he could freeze a foe and drain their life through sheer willpower alone.
Of course, his powers were learnt from the Leveller Mjarin, head of the Warlocks of Scholomance - which is why he creates new Warlocks in M2 form "madmen".
