Oh, also, I think you've been misled a bit by the common conception that magi are no good at swordfighting. To an extent, it's true: a berserker will beat the hell out of a warlock any day in hand to hand. Avatara, on the other hand, have to display consumate skill with the sword before even being accepted into the circle in the first place. As GURPS puts it: "Most commentators suggested that the sword served merely as a symbol, that an archmage who took the time to learn bladework would take the time to learn to use armies and use them well. Many a Light archmage has thought their time more efficiently used purely in spellcasting rather than in leading ordinary men and simply augmenting the soldiers' work with magery. Apparently one of the Avarata's shadowy founders did not want to see any of its members fall into this conceit."
