I don't know if the Journal Writer would fall under the category of hero. He doesn't fulfill the usual characteristics of a hero. He's definately heroic enough to demand recognition- as he's never mentioned again. He also lacks the old 'sacrifice to be a true hero' vein. I guess it isn't a necessity, but a lot of contemporary fantasy heroes sacrifice something or someone to achieve their heroic feat.
On that, the journal writer certainly doesn't perform any heroic feats. OK, he does in the sense that he is part of the Legion which defeated Balor- but he's not exceptionally heroic in the sense that Truan or Alric or Rabican were.
I'd say it'd be easy enough to say that the Journal Writer is the narrator (duh) of the story detailing the efforts of Alric. Throughout, Alric is a fairly prominent character, and it is he who sacrifices to defeat Balor. So, I'd argue that Alric was the 'protagonist' to Balor's 'antagonist'.
