I would guess that Phelot was injured during the binding process. As seen in-game, if the deceiver doesn't have enough mana to outright convert a unit, his binding spell will kill that unit. A Shade probably has more defenses against such a spell, being a magic user himself. So with his defenses gone, as well as a lot of his health, he could be bound. I doubt that he simply decided to turn to the light.
