I shared your experience almost to the letter. I too played SB before TFL, and hence had no foreknowledge or expectations about the myrkridia.
When I first saw them tearing apart the advance party, I truly panicked until realising the men were blue (I was a n00b after all).
Then, when I naively marched up the main road with Alric & three krids attacked from behind the houses on each side, I calmly faced them with lines of veteran warriors, only to see several slapped to earth like target dummies. To me they were a very frightening enemy, purely from a gameplay point of view.
Sure, later on you realise their awesome speed is identical to a zerk, and you soon get herons which are more their match in one-on-one combat, but that initial impact was pretty awesome.
Which leads me to think ... if you want to scare a player in a solo scenario, spring something on them with no fore-warning at all.
