In terms of Bungie's original backstory, I'd guess that Alric was right and the Leveller does have to die to be freed; but Balor foiled Alric's attempt to imprison him forever by self-destructing, causing the Devoid explosion.
The brokenness of the cycle would then be the comparatively minor fact that the Sword Age is pretty Light-dominated so far, as opposed to a world-shaking event like the permanent destruction/imprisonment of the Leveller.
Not sure how this would be modified under the Myth III story. You could perhaps say that a) Alric didn't know about Mjarin, and b) Balor again self-destructed, but in this case because he didn't want to end up a lunatic like Mjarin.
