Damas being a heron Gaurd was already immortal. He could have been corrupted to evil at any point in the 1000 years. He had to cut out his heart because he was corrupted and being a lesserman the healing no longer made him immortal.
The reason that Balor returned 300 years before the actual end of the Wolf age is:
Connacht went to the East and died about 100 or so years into the Wolf Age.
Damas perhaps searching for his old emperor or Artifacts of Power is corrupted in the East.
Ravanna who may have been with him is also corrupted.
Damas finds Connachts body and Ravanna, now evil and learned in dark arts from her studies in the East resurects Connacht herself, he is, by the nature of this necromatic spell, evil.
Connacht, now Balor attacks the West, however he lacks the power of the Leveller.
Attacks Cath Bruig when he has fetch, Myrms, Trow, Ghôls and allot of undead and blows it into tiny peices with the Sunhammer.
Without the Sunhammer he doesn't risk the Province until he is possesed by the Leveller, Alric is born.
Aids Ghol capture of Dwarvelands, and attacks The Province.
