This much is pretty obvious. They made use of the Tain themselves as a refuge/temple/gateway to the world of the spiders they worshipped. They let Connacht use it so that he'd turn a blind eye to their indiscretions, then most likely fled into it (or employed similar technology) when he was finally forced to move against them.
