There's a big difference between needing to eat and eating because you feel like it. The Trow did not eat the Oghres because they needed to do so, but because of the symbolism of the act, demonstrating how utterly they had destroyed the Oghres. A Trow does not need to eat in order to stay alive, but can do so if it feels like it.
As something of an analogy, Terry Pratchett says that Trolls, being silicatious lifeforms, can't actually digest people, but that hasn't stopped a lot of the more stubborn ones from trying. ;)
