A very simple answer. You see these Stygies are diffenert from Myth II stygies. In Myth II they were animated armour however in Myth III they are actual souls contained in Armour. And it says that many are not forced into it but because of their great loyalty they turned themselves to Stygies.
On the other thing, Well this may sound stupid and probably is buuuut:
Now Maz gets killed and the watcher Shadafies him. However being so powerful the Maz could not be controlled by the Watcher. So because he is neither living nor dead he believes that the Cycle and the rest of the world mean nothing to him so decides to bury himself, many of his gaurds swear an oath to gaurd his tomb and become Stygies.
Now those Lyche have been sent to take Maz out, hence why we see Lyche versus Stygies at one stage.
Now when we get to Myth I and Maz is on the Battle field, either a)He decided to come out of exile and aid in the final death of the Watcher and Whoops we kill him (unlikely)
b)Finaly loses battle of Wills against the Watcher and is drawn to him in his final hours.
c)During the Occupation of the East he goes to Mazzarins tomb and with most of the protectors dead (thanks to us) finally brings Maz under his power.
I think c is most likely.
