In Response To: Well, that's not proof... (SiliconDream =PN=)

: ...any more than the Brigand object/projgroup tag names
: are proof that they're actually Warriors.

Hmmm well there is no racial difference right there... who says there is about Maul-Ogre? Perhaps its the SAME as comparing a Bezerk to a dark archer; bezerks are big, strong and good, and dark archers are evil, weak, small and kinda um archers :). And basically Myth III TWA claims that the Oghre race was/is as complex as the human race.

: These both give us pre-release info; at some time during
: Myth2's development, the Mauls were envisioned as
: Oghres (probably) and the Brigands were envisioned as
: the Myth2 Warrior replacement. But later in
: development both these ideas were scrapped. The
: splitting of Mauls and Oghres was done very
: deliberately--you'll notice that most of the other
: Maul tags begin with "og". This means that
: they were all originally named "Oghre
: [something]", but that someone painstakingly went
: through and renamed them all to "Maul
: [something]."

I'd hate to have to do that. How tedious must THAT be. Well the Watcher was not The Watcher (callieach) (j/k). So, obviously Bungie meant them to be the Oghre origionally, so this presents the scenario that perhaps they are NOT extinct, as Bungie meant them not to be.

: In the final version, we know that Mauls are not
: Oghres--unless they're an incredibly mutated
: variant--simply because we have lots of pictures of
: Oghres in the Tales of the Fallen Lords comic, and
: they don't look anything like Mauls. Also, we're told
: that the Oghres were completely exterminated...and
: even if the Maul ancestors went into hiding back in
: the Wolf Age, the Trow would have noticed them once
: they were freed by Balor. Mauls aren't exactly
: low-profile. :-)

didn't notice them in Myth tfl. They live PRETTY far away from human lands, and the trow lands seem almost out of their reach (really they'd have to go through Gower to get to the Trow...). Anyway... not like the trow would run about yelling "WE DID NOT FINISH THAT WAR YOOHOO. WE'RE INCOMPETENT!" Why would they tell anyone? And really, if the Oghre stopped callin them names, and the Trow stopped using iron armour after they killed so many Oghre (if they killed all or not is what we're debatin eh?.... maybe they let the surrendering prisoners go?) they had no more need for the Oghre.

Anyway, wasn't Zoastrianism 'eliminated' by the Muslims in 700 AD or whatever it was? Not all is as it seems.

: But obviously MJ either overlooked the comic or, more
: probably, consciously rejected it as an info source.
: In fact, I'd say that the bulk of Myth III's conflicts
: with the Bungie backstory are focused on Tales, rather
: than the previous games. Which should certainly make
: it more palatable to most players.

Well, the thing is I think MJ took Bungie more seriously. And btw we ALL know how history is mutated over the years. Of course the trow would claim that Oghre were disguisting Orcs! Really no conlfict here. I mean, Jesus was Arabic in colour, not this pale white dood in all the frescos :)

Anyway, I think that the TFL manual points out that in fact, the Oghre were giants in their own right (just not compared to Trow).

And about the obvious differences between Maul and Ogre; my theory is that SB went and wooed to his side the small, weak raiding parties. Hence their inferior intellectual capiability. He was probabally rejected by the Oghre/Maul cities, who may have had a combined military strength greater than his at that point. Maybe Maul are young Oghre, trying to proove themselves, and are not yet fully mentally developed (heheh)
