I like to imagine that it was put there by Balor, perhaps
as a way of ensuring that his old shrine was preserved. Even
as the leveller, he may have liked the memory of being
worshipped, or of being a hero rather than a destroyer.

Perhaps this was a heron guard killed defending the entrance,
and Balor thought it fitting that the guard should be forced
to keep defending it in perpetuity.
