I rather like this theory. The Cath Bruig seal the entrance to this library/tomb, and one brave Heron Guard, protector of the empire, sacrifices his life in some sort of necromantic ritual and his spirit was bound to the place. That would explain why he didn't attack the narrator: because the guardian recognized him as a fellow Guard.

I don't think "fire" is the best desciption of the mahirs we see in m2, since they're completely black and shadowy. Maybe "dark" and "light" would be better terms for the mahir flavors?
