Actually, the Dwarves we meet in "Force Ten From Stoneheim" are specifically described as militia, and they're every bit as pyromaniac as any of the other dwarves we meet.
Overall, though, I'd agree with the obsolescence idea for why we see no Dwarven Axemen- after all, the end of the Wind Age, when Myth 3 is set, was over a thousand years ago, and considering that the Dwarves were capable of developing muskets and mortars in 60 years (although the desire to blast the Ghols out of Stoneheim may have fuelled their destructive little minds in this respect). Also, look at it from the point of view of your typical Dwarven recruit (all of whom suffer from an intense love of tecnological innovation): would you rather have a) a battleaxe, or b) a load of high explosives capable of blasting your enemies to tiny bits and giving you an excuse to shout "KABOOM!" and laugh manically?
I wouldn't be surprised if many Dwarven cocktailers brought along an axe as well, however- after all, noone wants to end up completely defenceless, and the Dwarves do have the axe/mace skill in GURPS- and, as GURPS says, a few diehards with ringing ears believe they should dust off the old plate and battleaxes.
