Ummm, actualy Baeldun was the commander of the 7th legion, which was dispactched to Scails to destroy SBs army before it could cause anymore mischif. He showed up later on and helped destroy Shivers advance guard at the battle of White Falls. However, nowere does it say he was an Avatara.

I always assumed they had become obsolete by the standeders of the reguler dwarven millitary, but I would say any millita that existed would have still used them.
The way I look at the story is to discount much of what we see in the games. When I think of the legion in TFL, I do not think of a group of clean, well equiped or smartly dressed soldiers. I think of a ragged bunch of surrivers who represent troops from across the continent. Surrvivers of the Provencal armys, refugiees from the Cath'bruig empire and men from all areas of the North Countrys (that includes the Berzerk lands).
By conciquince, I think of the dwarves as carrying a small battle axe or sword along with their cocktails.
That vision is much more dramatic in my oppinion.
