Consider this...
the Callieach weren't completely wiped out by the trow, instead, they decided that self sacrifice would be a better way to go, hence the whole great devoid thing (a theory i know you are all aware of). Now if the watcher was truly a Callieach, wouldn't he have given his life with his family and friends?
This leads me to believe he is
a. Not a Callieach
b. a sort of renengade Callieach
If the watcher was a renegade Callieach, cast out by his people for committing horrible atrocities or something like that (completely possible, knowing the watcher), everything seems to make more sense. Perhaps the trow decided he was not worth destroying, because he never fought against them...perhaps he even fought with them against his own people. And that would account for him being the last living Callieach, since he was not present when they all killed themselves.
