He did it because he's an ASSHOLE, for God's sake. :-) He tortures folks for fun on A Murder of Crows. He's characterized as "Balor's most brutal general."

One of the main personality differences between Balor and Soulblighter seems to be that Balor is goal-oriented--a mass murderer, but a disinterested one--while Soulblighter is a genuine sadist who takes pleasure in seeing pain.
