Ah, but do you live in a kingdom which is periodically overrun by the undead, who slaughter 90 percent of the population? In earlier and more violent times
(and, more importantly, in fantasy novels), the process of succession was slightly less sedate than it is now. The strongest guy won, and the peasants wanted him to win for the sake of stability.

Magical power may be hereditary; his ancestors may have become kings through their battle prowess, as he did after the fall of Balor. Also, the royal family would probably be well-trained in magic if they showed any natural talent, in order to better defend themselves and the kingdom.
