: That doesn't seem to work the same in Myth as it does
: elsewhere. Note that the Fallen often call eachother
: by their true names (Damas, Myrdred, Ravanna) and
: proceed to fight with all their normal powers. Only
: Alric, of all the Nine, seems to have had a different
: name, and then only in the betas and one vestigial
: flavor text: Caliban.
That brings up an interesting point. Maybe the reason the Fallen always have a brief discussion before they clash *is* to power each other down; otherwise their fights would be twice as vicious. On the other hand, Alric never addresses Soulblighter as "Damas," although he well knows that that's Soulblighter's real name.
I don't think the names we hear are their *true* names; they're simply their "public" names from before they were taken by the Dark. If "Damas" and "Myrdred" were the true names of Soulblighter and the Deceiver, then back when they were on the side of good they'd have been completely vulnerable, since everyone called them by those names. So I don't think we know anyone's true name.
I mentioned this a while ago, but no one had anything to say about it, so I'll try again. (I don't have anything new to add either, I'm afraid.) All of the Nine that we see seem to have either masks, helmets, or painted faces. Do you think this is the good-guy version of the "true name"; the "true face?" Maybe they lose a portion of their power if people see what they really look like, while the Fallen Avatara lose their power if people learn their real name.
Or maybe the Fallen Avatara are also required to alter their looks, so they either wear a helmet like Balor and the Watcher or take more drastic measures and destroy part of their face like Soublighter, Shiver and The Deceiver.
