Actually he was going to shatter the Cluodspine. That would send rocks flying accross the continent. that would hae crushed everything and being like a giant meteor shower.
Why it erupted was probably because throuwing soulblighter into the lava was like throwing a few sticks of dynamite. his death would have been explosive enough to make it erupt. Kinda like the great Devoid blowing up in Myth TFL except with less power.
That just makes more sense to me.
