'Undead' and 'alive' are not synonyms, notwithstanding strange definitions given in dictionaries that are either in little use or disuse. I don't see 'democratic generalizations' that go along the lines of 'undead' = 'alive' being of any use. One thing we know for sure from the text is that those words aren't synonyms! ("It doesn't bother the undead one bit, I'm sure.")
Of course, we can decide to mean whatever we want to mean with the words we use, but there's a certain principle of charity in interpreting text. If we can't rely on that, we're completely lost. 'Undead' might mean pink and fuzzy. And 'pink' means opaque; and fuzzy means being a mountain goat on or before January 3, 1954 or being in orbit after January 3, 1954, and THAT means....
Give it up. You're embarked on sophistry. Start simple, avoid circularity. And take it as given that 'undead' does not mean alive.
