The 20 years war was a war of succession which took place 150 years before "current events" in TFL.
: "The province" dindt exist till the end of the
: great war. Before all the great cities of the west
: were individual city-states with thier own king. After
: he defeated Balor, Alric became king of what remained
: of civilized lands, which included all the cities of
: the West which came to be known as "the
: province".
The Province is all the lands south of the Free Cities (which are called free because they're not part of the Province) and west of the Cloudspine. Scales, Tyr, Covenant, and all the small subsidiary villages, all the plains to the east of them, are the Province. It extisted during TFL, even 150 years earlier, though all the cities had their own kings. In SB, after everything had been demolished in TFL, Alric reigns over all the civilized (read: human) world, which is just the Free Cities and the Province until they recapture Muirthemne. (And I've gotta wonder, how are they gonna turn that big ass desert into a fertile empire again?)
