I have a suggestion.

Life is the essense of being alive.
Death is the state of having died.
Undeath is the state of having un-died.
Unlife is the essense of "life" for something which has un-died.

Undead, or unliving, means the same thing; their are neither dead, nor living, but UN-both of them. Normally when something is unalive, or not alive, it is simply dead; but if it is also undead, or not dead, and yet not simply alive again, it is... undead. Unalive. Neither death nor life. They rot like corpses and are fueled only by magic, but they move around, and some of them even think, like living beings. It is a mixed, un-state.
