Caliban is Alric. It's his name from the betas. Mauriac was Prince Regent while Alric was too young to reign. As explained by someone else, a regent fills in for the ruler while he/she is temporarily unable to rule for some reason, such as being young, gone or sick. Thus Alric was supposed to be ruler of something.

He's a great hero. Great heroes get put in charge. Look at all the generals who have been US presidents. Plus, his unit-type is king in Myth 2 until he becomes Emperor.
