In Response To: Re: MythIII canon (Tronyn)

: I recall some comments from MJ about the Asylum and them
: saying that what's done here is creative writing not
: research. I completely agree. MJ also said that if
: there was a small messup in Myth, like say, the
: Watcher's two left arms, it was not because of some
: huge underlying storyline element, but it was just a
: bug. I also agree. The watcher has two left arm
: theories are probably just having some fun with a
: little messup Bungie made.

Yeah, that was the interview I posted with Andrew Meggs.

: However, I really didn't like the way they worded it.
: They said something to the effect of "If there's
: a contradiction in the storyline, it's because someone
: at Bungie didn't pay as much attention as they might
: have to the window dressing on their game about
: tactical combat."

Often, it obvously is. Now that we know this, it explains a lot, and we don't have to go about the nearly impossible task of generating a very complex world to describe what, in reality, is no more than a mistake.

: Now I for one consider Myth's storyline to be a little
: more than window dressing.

I agree. Even if Bungie didn't make it so, MJ surely is! Pfhor's conviction on this does not yield.

: I realize they weren't
: saying that about the entire storyline, but I do think
: that bungie put in subtle little hints and references
: that were not just 'screwups.'

Absolutely. We can now, however, dismiss what would otherwise obviously be seen as a stupid mistake and be turned into a huge and complex Mythworld theory as just a mistake. Scott certainly seems to have taken this into account.

: I don't know if anyone
: at MJ had elongated contact with bungie, they said
: basically it was 'Here's the engine, have a ball,' so
: I don't think they're in a position to be making that
: judgement.

They most surely are. Besides the fact that they have the full rights to the game, or rather Take 2 has the rights to such and enlisted MJ to fiddle with the story as they directed, they met with Bungie at least a few times. They definitely got a general idea, and Scott seems to have constructed a universe even more complex and interesting as Bungie's.

: As well, I don't know if anyone there knows a lot about
: world mythology, but if they did they would know that
: a lot of the names and events and such that bungie
: selected for their universe DID have a lot of backing
: signifigance and were obviously carefully selected.
: Now if they did that, wouldn't it seem strange for
: them to "screw up" a few flavour texts after
: obviously and subtly putting so much work into the
: universe?

Oh, yes, I agree. They had a lot of good ideas and expressed most of them, but they were very sloppy too. This doesn't demerit the story considerably, but it shows that not everything Bungie wrote or presented was gospel on its own creation. It's a group of mistakes a lot of it, and others are meant to mean something.

This is where we come in. :-) It's our job to decipher these runic tales and figure out what is true and what isn't, and why. I think that's Asylumite Directive enough :-).

: They did not just randomly make things up. There is a
: hell of a lot of depth in Myth's storyline, and to say
: that there isn't in order for MJ to do whatever they
: like with it, regardless of how many 'screwups' there
: were in the storyline, strikes me as an ignorant thing
: to do. I'm sure they won't go too far from what's
: likely, as well as what Bungie probably had in mind,
: but they should be paying attention to the little
: things instead of just dismissing them. Additionally,
: the shouldn't just explain away everything - the new
: story should raise as many questions as it answers.

I'm glad we agree :-).
