I think the head's blowing up at the Devoid *was* a severe punishment. Had Alric come along (which he didn't, being a cowardly/prudent fellow,) he would have been killed too. Also, Soulblighter's punishment seems to be in the afterlife, according to the Myth II epilogue. So it's possible that Alric would still have lived a millennium-long life and *then* have been tortured by the gods.

And I think Balor's power failed when he was decapitated; otherwise you would have been swamped by his remaining forces, and the rest of the West would have been annihilated by the time you got his head to the Devoid. Only the undead personally bound to the lesser Lords, like Soulblighter, survived.
