Not break the cycle, but force it. Pretty close though. He was trying to usher in a Dark age when it wasn't time, not to stop the light/dark cycle; but either way it "breaks" the cycle, as much as inserting another 1 or 0 in the middle upsets a pattern of 10101010101010. If he succeeds, at least, which he didn't. Myth II was just the inevitable "clean up" war that happens after the turn of the millenium in Myth-land.
