From the Myth II manual:

"Alric reclaimed his throne after defeating Balor."

So he was the *rightful* king but, by the time he came to adulthood, half his kingdom was under the control of the Dark and so he didn't consider himself a king until he defeated Balor and reclaimed the Province.
