If Alric was refering to the Leveller, that would mean that he thought he could stop the cycle by chopping off Balors head. If he thought this, I expect Nine Skull would have known (see Epilogue for Myth II).
Still, he may be right. Maybe Alric did upset the cycle. Maybe the Leveller can't 'possess' a new person until his old one is dead and so throwing the head into the Devoid means he will be alive forever. This is all speculation though so pay no heed to it!
