: It's what Asmo & Smasher do all the time to produce
: no-damage films. Usually it means hitting the pause
: button every two seconds to see where the next
: javelin's going and move the appropriate unit
Actually, when I'm in the middle of a large fight, I often end up pausing (and usually saving) every sixteenth of a game second. Needless to say, I end up with a huge number of saves:).
: which to my mind is a lousy way of playing. If you can make
: em dodge in real-time that's much more fun ;)
I agree, which is why I started off doing seven-law films. Unfortunately, it's simply not possible to do a lot of the stuff we try to do even on half speed, and therefore pausing frequently is needed.

Anyway, answering the original question, my formations are
1- Meelee
2- Archers
These two are pretty much set in stone, except for the one or two levels (in M2) that don't have them.
3- Usually dwarves, but if I don't have any, this'll be jmen, locks, or the like.
4&5- Journeymen and warlocks (assuming I have dorfs)
8,9&0- Individual units, such as Alric, the Deceiver, or scouts, so I don't mix them up or accidently erase a preset.
There's not much rhyme or reason for the presets, but maybe they'll be useful. Or not. Whatever:P
