In Response To: Rurik the Rus (Forrest)
: Hey all,
: Just reading a history book here, and I came across the
: origin of the name "Rurik". No, not Rurik
: the Dumb or Rurik the Daft or even Rurik the Elder,
: Rurik the Rus (Rus was what the Slavs called the
: Vikings and their lands). Rurik was a military leader
: in the A.D. 860s, whos successors later came to rule
: Novgorod and Kiev and other Russian principalities.
That's so odd... Rus (with a slight i-sound connected with the "s") is one way of saying Russia in modern-day Russian.
