We've never actually seen them, but given that they could be tolerated and even treated as allies by the Cath Bruig for quite some time, I'd imagine that they were fairly ordinary-looking humanoids who could conceal their activities for a while.

Well, their actual escape into the Tain (if it really happened) occurred after the Krids had already been imprisoned, so it'd be a little late for building defenses. Plus Krids are highly resistant to Lightning. I tend to think the towers were more for protection against human intruders, rogue spiders and the other Tain inhabitants whose skulls disturbed the narrator so much.
