They found the exit, and escaped through it with the aid of their Dwarves. But only the people in that immediate vicinity would escape then - there were a whole lot of other Legionnaires trapped all across the Tain. So Murgen and Cu Roi destroyed the Tain at the exit, releasing everything that was trapped inside it. Remember that the narrator was worried that destroying it would release everything that had EVER been trapped inside - the Myrkridia too? It seems it just released the living things that weren't supposed to be there, and left the dead Krids and the native spiders behind. Of course, it could have actually just opened up rifts back into reality through which the Legionnaires could escape, so anything inside that wasn't trying to leave would just stay in there.
