It's true, I think it was mentioned in an interview with Jason Jones way back in the TFL days. They took a pizza box lid, drew a line down the middle, and put on one side of the line cliche'd, over-done ideas that they weren't going to use, and original new concepts that they liked.

: No "coming of age heroes?" What about Mauriac?

The example of cliched ideas not to be used was something like "young boys coming of age to discover they possess great powers, then going on to save the world". Mauriac is just lucky young warrior who became a hero. Alric is a mage - he was either born and raised one, or just decided to study magic and became one, so he's not coming of age into some sort of magical inheritance he never knew he had.
