The one thing about Mazzarin that most people miss is that the size of these "waves" is never specified. Tehy could have been any size and were, in all probability, huge. Mazzarin was on his own and probably had to destroy hundreds in not thouseands of thrall, severely depleting his powers before he faced the Watcher himself, still with another wave of thrall to give the lone avatara trouble even while he was fighting the fallen lord.

Well, shiver was one of the greatest battle mages in history and Soulblighter was one of the best warriors, so it is a toss-up.

The only problem with this is that the Avatara had qualtities other than sheer power. They seemed to be both better tacticians and better generals than their undead counterparts.
