WHOA! Who says we need to capture a crow, damage with Balmung, and throw him into lava? If Alric had a elbis (eblis?) stone, Soulblighter would have been completely paralyzed, and unable to defend himself = quick death.
Note that the Light killed Soulblighter, but Balor isn't (necessarily) dead. Sure, we bashed the **** out of him, chopped off his head, and threw it in the Great Devoid, but he was whining all the way there, so he wasn't dead.
(and you thought SB was tough.)
