Don't get too interested in defining "races" or Nathan Bitner will come and burn down your house. In this context, it most likely just means the Myrmidons used to be a clan of zerks. Once they were made immortal, they became sufficiently unique physically and mentally (really ugly and really mean) to be considered their own "race".
