Exactly!! He had those troops because he was such an awesome mage and commander! Sb never came close.

We know they were alive since the Writer says the rest of the fallen were hunted down and killed. Had they died before he shurely would have menioned something as momentous as that. Plus the D wasn't frozen in the river. And SB wasn't great ;)
