Actually, I think that the 'shade' Mazzarin really was the same as the Avatar of that same name. First, if he was able to basically predict the future (via the total codex), he may have faked his death at the hand of the Watcher (the deceiver did it), and later let one of the Fallen Lords think he was bound into their service.
**note* I think there was a discussion here about Shades being bound to a specific Fallen Lord, not directly to Balor. (Balor -> Fallen -> Shades)*
Anyway, then he was able to basically let the Light appear to kill him, using only weak magic so as not to hurt the cause of the light too badly. (of course, he did more damage to some of us the first time we saw him...)
