Im not saying he was a bad commander, in fact he was an amazing general and his magic was stronger than Alric's. All Im saying is that he was not accustomed to the suicide tactics of Alric, and he thought Alric was being a fool.
"Join me or die, Alric, you cannot hope to win this battle"
"I do not need to win ,only to kill you"
That meant Balor wasn't expecting Alric to win, even with a powerful artifact. Earlier he said
"The rest of your legion has been destroyed Alric, what more can you do with this pitiful band"
Meaning he thought Alric had tried to destroy his army the old fationed way....
