I pondered over this sentence for quite a while, and I'm still not sure how to translate it.
If you're talking about Shades being undead Avatara, that's a possibility, but there isn't anything which says that Shades are necessarily undead Avatara. The Avatara were the same as The Nine, which is a group which gets new members to replace lost ones here and there.
If Shades are only evil archmages which want to turn themselves to the Dark, they will almost never be Avatara, as the Avatara are notoriously good, and it would be weird for any of them to become corrupted and become Dark.
If Shades are the reanimated corpses of long-dead (or medium-dead) sorcerers, then they might be Avatara. We simply don't know about the process well enough to be sure.
P.S.: Forrest, is there a way for one to make the "optional image url" come up the same every time posting a message, such as the "your name", "e-mail", and "password" text fields do?
