I decided I would respond to myself directly since I have more to say :-), playing devil's advocate, you know.
: Canon information list: 1.) Ingame texts
: 2.) Ingame playing
: 3.) Manuals
: That's it. There is nothing else that can possibly be
: canon, and I don't even think Manuals should be there.
: Now, this quickly comes to the question of GURPS, and
: why it isn't there.
: GURPS is not canon because:
: 1.) Contradictions galore!
Those can be ignored where they happen; other info is still good.
: 2.) Bungie's original writers didn't write it.
: 3.) Bungie's original writers didn't review it, OK it, or
: assist with it.
But Bungie did approve it, and that's good enough.
: 4.) It's no more than the incredible story of Myth
: compacted and altered to fit into the GURPS Role
: Playing System; it's an RPG.
It's the story none-the-less. The RPG only affects it in a few, obvious places.
: 5.) Gene Seabolt didn't finish the game before writing
: it.
You mean the thing about Dec not being alive? Yeah, but that's a contradiction that can be overlooked.
: 6.) Inconsistancies, inconsistancies, inconsistancies
The information given equals it out.
: Equally, there are some good reasons for why GURPS *is*
: canon. I tried to list as many as I could think of.
: GURPS *is* canon because:
: 1.) Bungie approved it.
Not the writers, and they obviously did it without thinking about the story very heavily; and I suspect that Bungie just approved it because it knew it was dying, promote the game, and only approved it at first in that "it's ok that you use the story to make your RPG" which turned into, people handing down third and fourth hand information, confusions, "it's the story exactly," which it obviously is not.
: 2.) It gives a lot of good ideas, and a lot of it kind of
: makes sense.
Yeah, but too much of it has this terrible, impure, putridness about it. It's only for an RPG, and Bungie screwed up in saying it was a full story, which it is not. Scott Campbell himself said that the story is such. He has the original design documents!!! He knows the exact truth, and GURPS is not like Myth III is appearing to be. This means IMMEDIATELY that GURPS is at least slightly flawed in story, far beyond the "minor" inconsistancies. How can you say anything against a sequel? (BTW, the following stories ingame are always more accurate, though GURPS is not a sequel, nor ingame, so it is irrelevant, whereas Myth II is clarification and elaboration. Therefore, Myh III will be even more accurate.)
: 3.) Bungie knows what it's doing?
Hardly. MS buyout is proof.
