Actually, "It was they who poisoned the soul of iron" doesn't imply that the FG's have always been against technology. I think it says that the FG's and TRO were once close, but when the TRO used iron to wage war, then the FG's decided technology wasn't for them, and went back to the forest, hating the TRO. So they don't hate technology, they hate technology used for war.
