It's somewhat different when the person you appoint is in direct line to get the throne anyway. What you don't want is someone with some claim to the throne who is not in the direct line. The best I can figure, Caliban was killed and his son Alric wasn't old enough to rule, so Mauriac was appointed. He had no claim to the throne, nor much desire to be king, but he was a big hero, so people would accept him as a temporary leader.
