So your saying that Mauriac was probably just given the title prince regent (For killing Fang Grinder perhaps?) , however I have done a little info digging myself.

King George the Third of England (The guy who fought the American colonys and had the tea tax and whatnot) Was the king of england until they locked him up in an asylum because he had gone insane (Wether because of a disease or because of a pyche problem is still unknown) and while he was locked up his son, George the Fourth became regent and "Ruler of England in all but name". Later King George the third was reinstated after being concidered 'Sane' and his son had to wait his turn. Similar to what happened in Myth

Also Mauriac would have known that Alric being a Super Magician/Tactician compared to Mauriac being just a really good soldier. And since most of the people on the Light side are pretty honorable (Happens in desperate times) he probably would have given in. I wouldn't have wanted to be the king of a province that had a 99.9% chance of being utterly destroyed.
