Funny, I was just thinking about this today, but I never intended to post about it...
Myth's story is fucked.
I have temporarily modified the Naughty Words list just so I can make this emphasis, as no other words will suffice.
Bungie had a good story written. Then changed it mid-development, which caused some problems, but they were able to pretty much clean up after themselves and settle on a final story. But most of that final story was never told, only hinted at. We had to guess at a lot of it, which was fun.
Then Bungie made the mistake of letting SOMEONE ELSE tell the rest of that story, and tell it in an intentionally multiple-choice way. Now we don't know what is the actual story of Bungie's, what is a vague partially-written or partially-told story of Bungie's, and what is just some bullshit Gene Seabolt made up. This has caused a horrible schism in Myth story fans.
They have made still further mistakes by publishing a 3rd-party creation, Chimera, as cannon, despite it having really sucky story. Thankfully Chimera didn't impact the central Myth story as we know it.
Now, what's even worse, Bungie has had to sell the rights to the Myth story, and someone else is writing an addition/expansion to it. Now I trust that Scott is a decent writer, but this is just like GURPS; we don't know what was Bungie's original story and intent or what MJ is making up just to have cool stuff in M3. Not to mention that it conflicts with what has thus-far been the only source of the greater story outside of the games, GURPS Myth. If the two said the same thing, they we could assume that they were drawing from the same original design docs, but it seems they don't...
In short, there IS no Myth cannon. There are multiple Myth cannons. And we have no idea which is the TRUE Myth cannon, which is JJ and Robnar's orginal intent. And we have no way of knowing this unless someone released those original design docs, which of course they're never going to do, and besides which that would spoil all of our fun. Perhaps someone with access to those docs could settle debates between the truthfullness of conflicting sources by saying "The doc says this", and not taking their personal extrapulation of the truth into account at all. But of course nobody's going to do that either.
Myth's story is irrevocably fucked-up, leaving us unable to debate it. And the only way to fix it would be to lay the complete and whole truth out before us, which would leave us nothing to debate. So we're screwed.
