In Response To: Re: Spiders, time, mad myrks, etc. (duckyjo)
: Oh. Okay. So if he could have, then why didn't he?
: Because there weren't that many myrks in the first
: place. OK, so I think we've got that problem solved...
: or do we (to be continued, maybe)
: Well, I don't know about spiders. Remember, mosquitoes
: die by the thousands when they try to suck our blood,
: and they've been around for millions of years. They
: never show any sign of being afraid of us except when
: we startle them by moving. They still try to suck our
: blood, and we still try to kill them. Spiders aren't
: soooo different from mosquitoes. Sure they're
: arachnids, and mosquitoes are insects, and spiders are
: higher up on the food chain, but that's just a minor
: technicality.
Yeah, but that's because you get swarmed by a thousand mosquitoes at a time, all fairly closely related. If you swat fifty of them, and the other 950 get a good meal, it's a worthy sacrifice. When a pack of spiders attacks a pack of myrks, on the other hand, none of the spiders survive, and even if a couple of myrks die, the spiders don't have a chance to eat them before they get swatted themselves. So there isn't the same evolutionary impetus. It's not that mosquitoes are suicidal as a species (or order, I guess) because they're bugs; it's that there are a lot of them (many more than spiders) so they can sacrifice a lot of lives for a meal.
: Well, the way I was trying to get it across was like
: this: Since myrks are beasts, and have bestial
: intelligence, they are quite stupid. They're just good
: fighters. The summoner always had a small group of
: myrks in the tain with him (small is relative). There
: were just enough myrks for him and his giants to
: control. Even if the myrks went nuts, I'm sure the
: fetch, being evil demon-ish priests, had some way of
: keeping them in line. Fetch may have more power than
: just lightning, you know. Most other units in the game
: seem to have more powers than what they are given in
: game. The deceiver could teleport, make giant clouds
: of corrosive gas, etc.
Perhaps, though if the Fetch had a non-lightning power they'd have every reason to use it against your giant units in TFL or Myth II, and somehow they never did. And The Deceiver was operating at a much higher, Leveler-fueled power level back in TFL when he was attacking people with ribbons of fire and so on (if that's what you're referring to).
: Oh yeah. Anyway, they didn't keep the thrall around
: because the fetch and myrk giants probably couln't
: control the myrks enough to keep from eating them. The
: fetch didn't give a rats rear end about the thrall.
: They probably wouldn't waste their time protecting a
: renewable resource. Myrk giants would welcome the
: chance to moosh a thrall. So myrks could protect
: themselves, and thrall couldn't. Simple as that.
Do the fetch give a rat's rear end about anyone? They're aliens who have been drafted into this battle. I don't think they feel any maternal concern for, say, Myrmidons or Mauls. I think they'd protect thrall as readily as any other resource.
So how about Soulless? Put 'em on a high rock, they're safe from the Myrkridia and can rain spears on any invading enemies. Why aren't they in there, smart guy? (And you're not allowed to say "They're just not," or "gameplay considerations;" it has to be an extremely complicated explanation involving undead psychology and the chemistry of spider poo.)
