The Sarissa was only used in the initial stages of battle, and even then only on level ground (on uneven ground openings appeared). From what I gathered (we did the unit a few weeks back though), Macedonia was independent of Greece, and Alexander (and his father Phillip) were 'in charge' of the area. I've forgotten what my original comments about spears were, but I looked through my textbooks and found pictures of Greek mercenaries with spears about 6 foot long (longer than the one in the pic) and the Persians fought with similar ones. In hindsight, I don't know why I said they were too long because the spears described in other historical campaigns are of similar length. I don't know feet, but 18 feet for a Sarissa sounds right. I think I got confused when you said I meant too short (for a combat spear) and forgot to check it out. Good to know someone else in this world enjoyed Macedonian History. :)
