GURPS says common myths hold that they attained some sort of great power, and the Trow sunk them with a piece of Callieach magic. Others attribute the same motive to the Dark Gods themselves. I think Bungie never wrote it definitely, because GURPS basically pulls a Head on it - it gives a number of different alternatives, basically only affirming that they got a power that threatened someone, so that someone sank them.
