: Well, sure. I wasn't saying the summoner couldn't
: possibly have resurrected a few million or billion or
: zillion myrks; I was just trying to explain the fact
: that, apparently, he didn't.
Oh. Okay. So if he could have, then why didn't he? Because there weren't that many myrks in the first place. OK, so I think we've got that problem solved... or do we (to be continued, maybe)
: But after thirty thousand years, wouldn't even spiders
: learn not to attack myrks? I mean, there's a pretty
: strong evolutionary impetus here. Attack myrks and you
: die. Most earthly animals have learned to fear humans
: in less time than that.
Well, I don't know about spiders. Remember, mosquitoes die by the thousands when they try to suck our blood, and they've been around for millions of years. They never show any sign of being afraid of us except when we startle them by moving. They still try to suck our blood, and we still try to kill them. Spiders aren't soooo different from mosquitoes. Sure they're arachnids, and mosquitoes are insects, and spiders are higher up on the food chain, but that's just a minor technicality.
: Soulblighter was apparently willing to send a bunch of
: fetch into the Tain, and I can't see why Myrkridia
: would attack thrall and not fetch. They may be made
: out of energy, but their skins must be tasty and their
: lightning barely singes a Myrk's whiskers. 'Sides,
: thrall are half-rotten dead people and there must be a
: limit even to what a Myrk will eat. Double 'sides,
: there are lots of levels with both Thrall and
: Myrkridia. You never see them eating one another (it
: would make the game a lot easier, though...)
Well, the way I was trying to get it across was like this: Since myrks are beasts, and have bestial intelligence, they are quite stupid. They're just good fighters. The summoner always had a small group of myrks in the tain with him (small is relative). There were just enough myrks for him and his giants to control. Even if the myrks went nuts, I'm sure the fetch, being evil demon-ish priests, had some way of keeping them in line. Fetch may have more power than just lightning, you know. Most other units in the game seem to have more powers than what they are given in game. The deceiver could teleport, make giant clouds of corrosive gas, etc.
Where was I?
Oh yeah. Anyway, they didn't keep the thrall around because the fetch and myrk giants probably couln't control the myrks enough to keep from eating them. The fetch didn't give a rats rear end about the thrall. They probably wouldn't waste their time protecting a renewable resource. Myrk giants would welcome the chance to moosh a thrall. So myrks could protect themselves, and thrall couldn't. Simple as that.
The reason thrall and myrks get along outside the tain is that Soulblighter, being a fallen lord and immensely powerful sorcerer, could control them all (at least a little) and keep them in line.
